History of Lohri in Punjabi : 

ਇੱਕ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ ਇੱਕ ਦੁੱਲਾ ਭੱਟੀ ਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਡਾਕੂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ  , ਜੋ ਗਰੀਬ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਮੱਦਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਦੁੱਲਾ ਭੱਟੀ ਅਮੀਰ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਮਾਨ ਲੁੱਟ ਕੇ ਗਰੀਬ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ। 

ਉਸ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਇੱਕ ਬਾ੍ਹਮਣ  ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ ਜਿਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਦੋ ਬੇਟੀਆਂ ਸਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਸੀ ਸੁੰਦਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਮੁੰਦਰੀ । 

ਸੁੰਦਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਮੁੰਦਰੀ ਦੋਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੰਗਣੀ ਹੋ ਚੁੱਕੀ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਿਆਹ ਹੋਣਾ ਸੀ। ਬਾ੍ਹਮਣ ਦੇ ਗਰੀਬ ਹੋਣ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਬੇਟੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਆਹ ਕਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੇਟ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ  ਸੀ। 

ਜਦੋਂ ਸੁੰਦਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਮੁੰਦਰੀ ਬਾਰੇ ਉੱਥੋਂ ਦੇ ਹਾਕਮ ਨੂੰ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਉਸਨੇ ਦੋਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਆਹ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ  ਚੁੱਕ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੋਲ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ। ਜਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਬਾ੍ਹਮਣ ਨੂੰ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗੀ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਡਰ ਗਿਆ ਕਿ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਹੁਣ ਹਾਕਮ ਤੋਂ ਕੌਣ ਬਚਾਵੇਗਾ

ਹਾਕਮ ਦੀ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਦੁੱਲਾ ਭੱਟੀ ਕੋਲ ਵੀ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਗਈ ਤਾਂ ਉਸਨੇ ਲੜਕੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਕੇ ਲੜਕੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਮੰਗਣੀ ਵਾਲੀ ਥਾਂ ਹੀ ਵਿਆਹ ਕਰਵਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਕੀਤਾ। 

ਦੁੱਲਾ ਭੱਟੀ ਤੇ ਉਸਦੇ  ਸਾਥੀ  ਵਿਅਾਹ ਦੀ ਤਿਆਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੱਗ ਗਏ। ਦੁੱਲਾ ਭੱਟੀ ਨੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਆਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੋਈ ਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਸਮਾਨ ਦੇਣ ਲਈ ਕਿਹਾ। ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਸਹਿਯੋਗ ਨਾਲ ਸੁੰਦਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਮੁੰਦਰੀ ਦਾ ਵਿਆਹ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।

ਅਤੇ ਜਦੋਂ  ਸੁੰਦਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਮੁੰਦਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਗਨ ਪਾਉਣ ਲੱਗੇ ਤਾਂ ਦੁੱਲੇ ਭੱਟੀ ਦੇ ਸਾਥੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੋਲ ਤਾਂ ਸ਼ਗਨ ਪਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਕੁਝ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ ਦੁੱਲੇ ਭੱਟੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਆਪਾਂ ਸੇਰ ਸ਼ੱਕਰ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਗਨ ਪਾਵਾਂਗੇ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੁੱਲੇ ਭੱਟੀ ਨੇ 

ਸੇਰ ਸ਼ੱਕਰ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਗਨ ਪਾਇਆ। ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਇਹ ਲੋਕ ਗੀਤ ਬਣਿਆ।

ਜ਼ੀਮੀਦਾਰਾ ਲੁੱਟੀ

ਬੜੇ  ਭੋਲੇ ਆਏ

ਇਕ ਭੋਲਾ ਰਹਿ ਗਿਆ

ਸਿਪਾਹੀ ਫੜਕੇ ਲੈ ਗਿਆ

ਸਿਪਾਹੀ ਨੇ ਮਾਰੀ ਇੱਟ

ਸਾਨੂੰ ਦੇਦੇ ਲੋਹੜੀ , ਤੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਜੀਵੇ ਜੋੜੀ

ਉਸ ਦਿਨ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਲੋਹੜੀ ਦਾ ਤਿਉਹਾਰ ਮਨਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। 

ਲੋਹੜੀ ਤੋਂ ਕੁੱਝ ਦਿਨ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ ਬੱਚੇ ਲੋਹੜੀ ਮੰਗਣੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਵੇਂ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਜਨਮ ਲਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਲੋਹੜੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਖਾਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਨਾਈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਲੋਹੜੀ ਵਾਲੇ ਦਿਨ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕ ਮੂੰਗਫਲੀ ਅਤੇ ਰੇਵੜੀਆਂ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਸ਼ਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਲੋਕ ਆਪਣੇ ਘਰ ਦੇ ਮੈਂਬਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਧੂਣੀ ਵਾਲਦੇ ਹਨ। ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕ ਉਸ ਧੂਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਰ ਰਾਤ ਤੱਕ ਸੇਕਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਨਵਾਂ ਸਾਲ ਵਧੀਆ ਬਤੀਤ ਹੋਵੇ ਇਸਦੀ ਕਾਮਨੀ ਕਰਦੇੇ ਹਨ। 

History of Lohri in English :

Once upon a time there was a robber named Dulla Bhatti who helped the poor a lot. Dulla Bhatti used to loot goods from rich people and bring them to poor people.

In the same village lived a Brahmin who had two daughters named Sundari and Mundri. Sundari and Mundri were both engaged and were to be married. He was late in marrying his daughters as the Brahmin was poor.

When the ruler found out about Sundari and Mundri, he decided to pick them up before the wedding and bring them to him. When the girls' father, Bahman, found out, he was afraid of who would save us from the ruler

The word of the ruler reached Dulla Bhatti and he decided to meet the father of the girls and get them married at the place where they were engaged.

Dulla Bhatti and her companions started preparing for the wedding. Dulla Bhatti asked all the people of the village to give some or other items for the wedding. With the cooperation of all, Sundari and Mundri got married.

And when Sundari and Mundri started getting shaguns, Dulle Bhatti's partner said that he had nothing to get shaguns.

The apple got the omen of sugar. From which it became a folk song.

The festival of Lohri has been celebrated since that day.

A few days before Lohri, children start asking for Lohri. Lohri is celebrated in a very special way in the homes of people who have just given birth to new children. On Lohri day, everyone eats peanuts and sheep. In the evening, people sit with their family members and smoke. Everyone heats up that smoke late into the night and wishes you a happy new year.
