ਅਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ 31 ਅਗਸਤ 1919 ਨੂੰ ਗੁੱਜਰਾਂਵਾਲਾ ( ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ) ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਤਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਰਾਜ ਸੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਇੱਕ ਚੰਗੇ ਛੰਦ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰੀ ਸਨ। ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਨੇ ਕਾਫੀਏ ਅਤੇ ਕਾਵਿ ਰਚਨਾ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢਲਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤਾ। ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਦੇ ਮਾਤਾ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਚਾਰ ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਕੁੜਮਾਈ ਦੂਰ ਦੇ ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਭੂਆ ਦੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨਾਲ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ। ਜਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਗਿਆਰਾਂ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ ਹੋ ਗਈ। ਪਿਤਾ ਨੇ 16 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਾਦੀ ਕਰਕੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਦਾ ਬੋਲ ਪੁਗਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਫਰਜ਼ ਨਿਭਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ । ਇਹ ਸ਼ਾਦੀ 1936 ਵਿੱਚ " ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਕਵਾਤੜਾ " ਨਾਲ ਹੋਈ।
ਸਿੱਖਿਆ -
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਨੇ 1932 ਵਿੱਚ ਅੱਠਵੀਂ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਦਵਾਨੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਿਖਿਆਵਾਂ ਪਾਸ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ 1933 ਵਿੱਚ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਪਾਸ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਲਾਹੌਰ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਤੋਂ ਦਸਵੀਂ ਪਾਸ ਕੀਤੀ । ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਬਚਪਨ ਲਾਹੌਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਜਾਰਿਆ । ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਕਈ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਾਹਰ ਸੀ । ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਚਪਨ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਲਿਖਣ ਦਾ ਸ਼ੌਕ ਸੀ।
ਕਵਿਤਾ, ਕਹਾਣੀ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਬੰਧ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਲਿਖੇ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਿਤ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਪੰਜਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਜਿਆਦਾ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਣ ਰਚਨਾਵਾਂ ਅਨੇਕ ਦੇਸ਼ੀ ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਅਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਹਰਮਨ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਲੇਖਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਸੀ। ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਕਵਿਤਰੀ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸਾਹਿਤਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਸਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਅਨੇਕ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ਹੋਇਆ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਈ ਕਾਵਿ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਮਾਂ ਬੋਲੀ ਦੀ ਝੋਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾਏ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਕਾਵਿ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਿ ' ਠੰਡੀਆਂ ਕਿਰਨਾਂ ' 1935 ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਿਤ ਹੋਇਆ।
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਉੱਚ ਪੱਧਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਾਵਿ - ਗੋਸ਼ਟੀਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਾਨ ਸੀ । ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਰੂਸ, ਹੰਗਰੀ , ਰੁਮਾਨੀਆ ਅਤੇ ਬੁਲਗਾਰੀਆ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੀ ਯਾਤਰਾ ਵੀ ਕੀਤੀ। ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਨੇ 1956 ਵਿੱਚ ਸੁਨੇਹੜੇ ਕਾਵਿ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਿ 'ਤੇ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਅਕਾਦਮੀ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਇਆ। 1958 ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਮਿਲਿਆ , ਸਾਹਿਤ ਕਲਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਸ਼ਦ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਵੱਲੋਂ 1974 ਵਿੱਚ ਇਨਾਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ।
' ਕੰਨੜ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਸੰਮੇਲਨ ' ਵਿੱਚ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ 1978 ਵਿੱਚ ਇਨਾਮ ਮਿਲਿਆ 1982 ਵਿੱਚ ਕੈਨਵਸ ਕਾਵਿ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਤੇ ਗਿਆਨਪੀਠ ਅਵਾਰਡ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ।
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਰਚਨਾਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਫਿਰਕੂ ਫਸਾਦਾਂ , ਸਰਮਾਏਦਾਰੀ ਸ਼ੋਸ਼ਣ ਦੇ ਖਿਲਾਫ਼ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਬੁਲੰਦ ਕੀਤੀ।
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਦਾ 31 ਅਕਤੂਬਰ 2005 ਨੂੰ 86 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੇਹਾਂਤ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।
ਅੱਜ ਆਖਾਂ ਵਾਰਸ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਤੋਂ ਕਬਰਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬੋਲ।
ਤੇ ਅੱਜ ਕਿਤਾਬੇ ਇਸ਼ਕ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਅਗਲਾ ਵਰਕਾ ਫੋਲ।
ਇਕ ਰੋਈ ਸੀ ਧੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਤੂੰ ਲਿਖ ਲਿਖ ਮਾਰੇ ਵੈਣ।
ਅਜ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਧੀਆਂ ਰੋਂਦੀਆਂ ਤੈਨੂ ਵਾਰਸ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੂੰ ਕਹਿਣ।

Amrita received her early knowledge of coffee and poetry from her father. Amrita Pritam's mother got engaged to her aunt's son in a distant relationship at the age of four. Her mother died when she was eleven years old.
The father married Amrita Pritam ji at the age of 16 and fulfilled his duty. She was married in 1936 to Pritam Singh Kawatra.
Education -
Amrita Pritam passed the eighth and scholarly examinations in 1932, passed Giani in 1933 and then passed the tenth from Lahore University. Amrita Pritam spent her childhood in Lahore. Amrita Pritam was an expert in many languages. He was fond of writing since childhood.
There are more than fifty books of poetry, stories and essays written and published by Amrita Pritam. His important works have been translated into many native and foreign languages.
Amrita Pritam was one of the popular writers of Punjab. Amrita Pritam is considered to be the first poet of Punjabi language. Amrita Pritam was one of the writers who was translated into many languages. He published many collections of poetry in the mother tongue of Punjabi. His first collection of poetry, Thandian Kiran, was published in 1935.
Amrita Pritam was the epitome of high level poetry. He also traveled to Russia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. Amrita Pritam received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1956 for her collection of beautiful poetry. In 1958, he was honored by the Punjab Department of Languages. In 1974, he was awarded by the Sahitya Kala Parishad, Delhi.
In her writings, Amrita Pritam raised her voice against communal riots and capitalist exploitation.
Amrita Pritam passed away on October 31, 2005 at the age of 86.
